- Foundation — the base upon which everything rests
- Divine support — God's upholding hand
- Circle — the endless cycle, the eternal nature of God's faithfulness
The Sound
- Pronunciation: "S" (like "support" or "salvation")
- English approximation: The sibilant s-sound, like support
The Hook That Will Make This Stick
Samech is a PERFECT CIRCLE. Look at the letter: ס. It's the only truly circular letter in the Hebrew alphabet. The rabbis say this represents the "cycle of sin" or the "encircling protection" of God. The samech-circle can be a trap of sin or a shield of protection—depending on whether you're inside or outside God's will.
Samech is SIXTY, and sixty is SUPPORT. The number 60 appears in Scripture as a number of provision and support: Solomon's temple was 60 cubits long (1 Kings 6:2). The city of Jerusalem was built as a city that is compact together—supported, unified (Psalm 122:3). Sixty is the number of sustained blessing.
Samech begins the word SUPPORT (Somek). The Hebrew root samak means "to lean upon," "to support," "to uphold." Psalm 91:1 says, "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." The samech-shadow of God's protection covers those who trust in Him.
The SAMECH appears in God's name. The name El Shaddai (אל שדי) contains a samech-sound. Shaddai means "the Sufficient One" or "the All-Sufficient One." The samech-support of God is enough to hold you up when everything else fails.
Theological Depth
The support and foundation imagery appears throughout Scripture:
The Pillars of the Earth — 1 Samuel 2:8 — "For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world." The samech-foundation of the world is God Himself.
God's Upholding Hand — Psalm 37:17 — "For the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous." The samech-strength of God sustains His people.
The Foundation of God's Throne — Psalm 93:2 — "Your throne is established of old; you are from everlasting." The samech-foundation of God's rule is eternal.
Jesus as the Foundation — 1 Corinthians 3:11 — "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ." The samech-support of God is found in Christ alone.
Jesus is our Samech. He is the Foundation that supports all things. He said, "All things have been committed to me by my Father" (Matthew 11:27). The One who upholds the universe by His word (Hebrews 1:3) is the One who holds you up.
Why You Won't Forget It
Picture a perfect circle drawn in the sand. The circle has no beginning and no end—eternal, complete. Inside the circle, you see a figure—you, safe and protected. Above the circle, the number 60 appears as light. The circle is both a shield and a foundation—supporting and protecting at the same time.
Circle. Support. Sixty. Eternal.
That's samech.
In the Sequence
Nun (נ) — Seed gave us life from death; Samech is what holds it up — the prop, the foundation, the circle of God's faithfulness. Next comes Ayin (ע) — Eye: to see, to perceive, the watchful care of God.

Putting It Into Practice
- Major System digit: 0 (Samech = 60, encodes digit 0) — Samech encodes the digit 0 in verse numbers (e.g., Psalm 23:10 or chapter 60)
- Suggested PAO: 00 — God (the LORD): God moving over the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2)—before "Let there be light." Samech = 0 = the circle, the void, the One who upholds. Person: God. Action: Moving over the face of the waters. Object: The deep (tehom).
- Verse encoding example: Genesis 1:2 — "The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" — the 0 (Samech): God over the deep, upholding. For the number 15 (e.g. verse 15) use 15 — Heman: leading the songs of ascent with cymbals. Hebrews 1:3: "Sustaining all things by his powerful word" — the samech-support.
