TLDR: After Joshua, Israel cycles through sin, oppression, crying out, and deliverance by judges. "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit." A dark period pointing to the need for a true King.

Failure to drive out the nations (ch. 1–2). Cycle repeated: Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, Abimelech, Jephthah, Samson (ch. 3–16). Micah's idol, Levite, civil war (ch. 17–21).
