13 - 1 Chronicles

TLDR: Genealogies from Adam to the exile, then David's reign: ark, covenant, and preparation for the temple. A post-exilic retelling that anchors Israel's identity in the line of David and the hope of the temple.

Before and After

  • Before: 2 Kings ends in exile; Chronicles retells from a priestly/Judah perspective.

Place in the Overarching Biblical Story

Identity and hope. For returned exiles, Chronicles says: you are the people of the covenant, the line of David, the worshipers of the one true God. The temple and the king point to the coming Messiah.
