17 - פ - Pey (#80)
The Picture
- Ancient pictograph: A mouth, the organ of speech and expression
- Modern character: פ (makes a "p" sound) or ף (Pey Sofit, "final pey" at word's end)
The Meaning
The pey is the picture of a mouth, of speech, of expression, and of the creative power of words. It represents what we say, what we speak into existence, and the verbal expression of God's truth.
- Mouth — the organ of speech, the means of expression
- To speak — to articulate, to declare, to say
- Word/Expression — the verbal form of thought
- Face — the presence, the front of the head
The Sound
- Pronunciation: "P" (like "praise" or "power")
- English approximation: The plosive p-sound, from the lips
The Hook That Will Make This Stick
Pey has TWO forms: OPEN and CLOSED. The pey (פ) looks like it has a "mouth" open at the top left. The final pey (ף) looks like it has the mouth closed. The rabbis say this represents the "closed mouth" of silence (when we should listen) and the "open mouth" of speech (when we should speak). Jesus said, "My sheep listen to my voice" (John 10:27)—closed mouth, open ears.
Pey is EIGHTY, and eighty is STRENGTH. Moses was 80 when he confronted Pharaoh (Exodus 7:7). Eighty is the number of mature strength, of the power that comes through endurance. The pey-mouth that speaks God's truth has power.
Pey begins the word PASSOVER (Pesach). The Hebrew word for Passover is Pesach—beginning with pey. The mouth (pey) that speaks deliverance. At the first Passover, the blood on the doorposts caused the destroyer to pass over—the pey-declaration of God's protection.
The PEY and the POWER of words. Proverbs 18:21 — "The tongue has the power of life and death." The pey-mouth can speak blessing or curse, life or death. Jesus said, "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken" (Matthew 12:36). The pey-promise: our words matter.
Theological Depth
The mouth and speech imagery appears throughout Scripture:
The Mouth of God — Isaiah 55:11 — "so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." The pey-word of God never fails.
The Word Became Flesh — John 1:14 — "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." Jesus is the Pey of God—the spoken Word made human.
The Power of the Tongue — James 3:3-12 — The tongue is a small part of the body but makes great boasts. The pey-tongue can bless God and curse men—this should not be.
Jesus Speaks — Mark 4:39 — Jesus said to the storm, "Quiet! Be still!" and the wind obeyed. The pey-mouth of Jesus commands creation.
Jesus is our Pey. He is the Word of God (John 1:1). He is the One who speaks and it is done. He said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away" (Matthew 24:35).
Why You Won't Forget It
Picture a mouth—open, speaking. From the mouth come words that take shape as they emerge—words like "light," "life," "love." Above the mouth, the number 80 glows like breath. The mouth is both warning and promise: what you say matters. Your words create or destroy.
Mouth. Words. Eighty. Power.
That's pey.
In the Sequence
Ayin (ע) — Eye was sight; Pey is speech — the mouth, the word, the creative power of what we say. The Word became flesh. Next comes Tzadi (צ) — Fish hook: righteousness, the chase, the hook that catches. Fishers of men.
